Geometric Dance Party!

Geometric Dance Party

The prompt was to create a 15 second animation for an assignment from School of Motion's After Effects Kickstart. I had to choose from a few provided tracks and then design and animate shapes, making them “dance” to the chosen music. I got a retro video game feel from it and had my story follow the flow of the music.

School of Motion supplied the music, The design and all of the assets were created by me.

 Concepting for Geometric Dance Party
As soon as I heard the audio track my mind was instantly taken back to being a kid playing on my old gameboy color and since the brief was very loose. I set out to create a color scheme and feel of an old gameboy or arcade adventure. I made big bright shapes to feel simmilar to buttons and clunky old 8 bit avatars.

I tried to use elements from each of these more retro games while creating the animation above.

My thought process was with very simple recognizable shapes I could create an almost arcade cabinet like feeling. Motions are very primative and choppy too to sell this old game feeling.

At this point I wanted to create the feeling of a boss character that controlled the other shapes. It has the power to control the background too. When it moves our whole world moves.
I had the squares at the end move across the screen in ways simmilar to the old Hanna Barbera cartoons almost giving an old “Scooby Doo Hallway” style feel to give a feeling of fun/wacky chaos.

Finally we conclude where we started so that the 15 second video can easily loop.
