Three Spheres:

Three Spheres was a project given to me by School of Motion to create a title sequence for a psychological thriller around three spheres.

I was told ‘Three Spheres’ is a mind-bending adventure with no hidden angles. This movie will teach you why you should fear prime numbers. Be sure to find a movie theater within your radius so you don’t miss out on this nail-biting mind-bender. Grab a slice of pi and experience sphere like you never have before.

Below is my creative process. I had a blast with this project!

Board 01: For my first frame I wanted to focus on how keeping things really passive and relaxed. To lure the viewer into a false sense of security. I made the director's name wavy to show that something isn't right. But it could be viewed as playful. The transition on this one is a flicker of lights into a quick transition.

Board 02: My idea is that when the colors are flipped the mystery is revealed. The writer's name is in a more natural state now. Also now that the "spot light" is on our three spheres it reveals that they are similar to the toxic symbol. Also the frame is more active to show that these are active spheres. The transition for this frame is that the three spheres move away and then charge at each other to create blackness that envelops the screen.

Board 03: Like an old type writter cinematography pounds on to the screen letter by letter. This gives the viewer the feeling of an old fashioned mystery. A sphere comes down and activates the “O” Turning it into an eyeball. The eyeball watches the three spheres as they scurry around. The spheres reveal Molly’s name while running. The transition for this frame is that the eye gets sucked away and the three spheres take (almost) center stage.

Board 04: Simple, clean, unsettling. It captures everything you need for a thriller flick. This board is made even more unsettling because to get here we had to inverse the background colors. Also to transition to this board the three spheres bleed down and become the windows/test tubes through which we see the new three white spheres. To transition to the next board we rotate in on the center and the white sphere becomes our center point.

Board 05: The spheres are reflected across the center and the text "three spheres" begins to appear but not super clearly. The idea behind having things reflected across the center was to challenge the viewer's understanding and give an air of mystery. To transition to the next slide we preform a rotation and inverse the top and bottom colors while also having the spheres orbit the center sphere.

Board 06: We resolve to the title but it is not just the title. The spheres are reflected across the horizon and honestly the eye is a tad confused on where to look. You feel uncomfortable and you know that the spheres are “not right” this is a stressful screen to end on, which is fitting because this is the start to a stressful movie. Honestly the ambiguity is my favorite part of this piece because is it better to be the three spheres up top that are completely dark, or the three white spheres on the bottom that are surrounded by darkness.

Three Spheres animation

Since you made it this far you can watch the preview of the Three spheres trailer.
(Don’t tell the animation side of this website that I showed the motion designers and animation or I will have to have a stern talking to with the owner of this website.)
